Congratulations! You’ve made it. After slaving away in the workforce – you’ve finally retired (or are almost there) and now you can ride off into the sunset and explore our big, beautiful world.
But before you book the stereotypical “retirement cruise” – consider trying something different.
Whether you’ve always wanted to sleep in a castle, go on an African safari, or visit all the U.S. National Parks, here are a few creative vacations you can take now that you’ve finally got the time.
Sleep In An Irish Castle
If you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping in a castle – now is your chance!
Through Airbnb, you can rent a tower in Drummond Castle in Drogheda, Ireland – complete with a rooftop patio view.
Spend your evenings relaxing and gazing at the stars, relishing in the fact you’re sleeping in an actual castle!
And the best part about visiting Ireland is you can customize your trip to make it as active or low-key as you choose.
Feeling adventurous? Consider hiking up the legendary Croagh Patrick.
This gigantic 2,507ft mountain attracts more than 1 million people a year and is absolutely breathtaking.
Prefer to do “nothing” and just unwind?
Well, you can listen to traditional Irish music just about anywhere – while you soak up the “40 Shades of Green” picturesque landscapes Ireland has to offer.
The Irish are a friendly and welcoming people, and they love when travelers visit their beloved country.
Visit All 63 U.S. National Parks
If you prefer to keep it somewhat local – America has endless possibilities and majestic sites suitable for every preference (and budget).
And what better way to tour the country than taking a trip to one of our many National Parks?
You can experience the uniqueness of each park in any season – but my personal favorite is springtime when it’s not yet too crowded (or too hot).
If you’re feeling extra adventurous – turn your vacation into a cross-country road trip and visit the states you’ve never seen.
And if you want a good laugh – check out our past coverage on the outrageous 1-star reviews of National Parks.
Bonus tip – adults 62 and older can purchase an annual Senior Pass for only $20 which gives you unlimited access to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites and covers the entrance fees into National Parks for the entire year!
An African Safari
If you have a wild side and have always wanted to wear a “safari hat” and get up close and personal with animals you don’t see everyday – a safari trip is a must.
It truly is one of those trips you’ve got to experience at least once – and you can choose your level of comfort – from luxury to downright rugged.
And if you’re wondering where to see each animal – different countries are known for different wildlife.
Smarter Traveler reported:
“Kendra Guild, Director of Operations & Product at smarTours breaks down where to go based on what wildlife you want to see:
For elephants, head to Chobe National Park in Botswana; for gorillas visit Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda; for lions go to Serengeti in Tanzania; for rhinos go to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and Kruger National Park in South Africa; and for rare birds, Kruger National Park has the largest and most diverse collection of birds in South Africa.”
So there ya go!
Savor Every Moment
Being free to travel the world is one of the best parts about retirement.
You can catch up with an old friend you haven’t seen in decades, explore a new destination, or live out your childhood dreams.
Just remember to take lots of pictures – and enjoy every moment!
Do you love to travel?
If you’re retired (or when you retire) – which place are you looking forward to visiting first?
