Today, homeschooling is more popular than it has been in decades and there are more resources for homeschoolers than ever before.
For Christians, this can be a very helpful way to ensure that your children are getting the God-centered education that you want them to have without having to pay the price to send them to a private Christian school.
Although it can be a sacrifice (somebody will have to be home teaching the children), there are many rewards everyone can receive when you decide to give homeschooling a chance.
Here are 5 reasons Christians should consider homeschooling their children:
1. More time with Your Children
Do you ever feel like you don’t know your own children? Or perhaps like they are not telling you everything that might be bothering them?
Well, that may change when you are homeschooling.
You are right there with them throughout the day, so if something significant happens in their lives, you are far more likely to know about it.
Some might say that you are being over-protective, but when you consider the fact that God has made you responsible for the souls of your children, you might see that being a bit protective can be a good thing.
Also, when you spend more time with your children you develop a closer bond with them and your whole family can become more tightly knit.
Spending quality time with your children can truly change your life.
2. Having Both Hands on Their Education
When you homeschool, you get to choose everything that they learn.
You don’t have to worry about them learning things that they probably shouldn’t know yet because you control their curriculum
Worried they won’t even be able to talk about God in school? This problem is eliminated when you homeschool. You can ensure God is a part of every subject.
And if they have questions related to spirituality? You are right there to help them with the answers. It can be a huge relief to know that they and their Faith will be secure in the safety of your home.
3. Getting to Focus on their Strengths
Does your child love to draw? Or maybe they are amazing in math? Great! You can custom tailor their education to enhance their strengths.
You will be able to cultivate that passion into something truly special and unique to your child.
Does your child learn more from visual cues instead of lectures? If you homeschool, you can teach in the best way they learn.
It is very important for children to have this kind of special attention. Who better to teach your child than someone who loves them more than any other earthly person could: their parent.
4. Making Them Feel Safe
Kids just seem to feel safer at home and when they feel that they are secure, they are more likely to want to learn.
When they are preoccupied with something that frightens them in their environment, it can be hard for them to pay attention to what they are trying to learn.
Having a parent there helps them to be honest about what they do and do not understand and can make them more confident in the future because they have grown up with that secure feeling of being home and being safe.
Homeschooled children often avoid the harsh judgment of the world which tells them that things like their appearance, their clothing, and their material possessions matter more than who they are on the inside.
5. Different Options for Socialization
Some people argue that homeschooled children are not socialized as well as children in the public school setting, but that can be remedied by simply joining together with other homeschoolers for socialization.
There are Christian groups for homeschooled children in many cities all over the country. These groups can serve as a socialization tool for you and your children and can help you find fellowship with others who share the same views on education and religion that you have.
You can literally surround your children with people who know and love the Lord Jesus! How amazing is that?
Not only can you create situations for them to be socialized with other children of all ages, but because they are not tied up in a strict school schedule all day, you can also make sure that they are socialized with adults, as well.
You can take them to nursing homes to visit the elderly and learn how to respect those who are older than them.
You can also take them to volunteer at different places and teach them about the importance of having compassion for others. The opportunities can be endless.
Overall, homeschooling can be a wonderful alternative to public school.
Not only is it safe, but it gives you a chance to focus on the natural strengths that your children have and on keeping them as close to the Lord as you can.
They don’t have to listen to or see things that you would rather them not, and they get the attention to their education that they deserve.
Do you have to homeschool to be a great parent? Absolutely not! As long as you are sure to give your children a good solid grounding in the Lord, homeschooling is certainly not a requirement!
But for the reasons I outlined above, Christians should definitely consider that homeschooling can be a great alternative to public school, especially with all of the insecurities of the world that we live in today.
