James Shupe made history when he won a lawsuit to become America’s first “non-binary” citizen.
He was praised by left-wing journalists as a brave activist.
But when he was finally honest with himself, he knew that he couldn’t keep living this lie.
As Christian Life Daily reports:
“By Christmas Eve 2019, I was done with the lies.”
Although he was born a man, Shupe tried to “transition” to life as a woman in adulthood.
He stockpiled women’s clothes, grew out his hair, called himself “Jamie,” and sued to gain legal recognition as a female.
Shupe first rose to fame as a “transgender” activist in 2015, when his quest to gain access to female-designated bathrooms was labeled a “human rights issue” by American journalists.
“New to identifying as a woman at that stage of my life, [I was] indoctrinated by the peddlers of transgender ideology to believe I was one,” Shupe admitted.
He felt a strong desire to become a woman, and LGBT activists pushed him to fully transition into life as a female. But they would never admit what was truly happening in Shupe’s heart.
“In hindsight, it was all part of a selfish quest to nourish my long-held sexual fantasy of being a woman,” Shupe said. “[It’s] a mental disorder.”
Some groups resisted Shupe’s attempts to live as a woman — most notably, conservative Christians who believed in the biblical definition of male and female and tried to guide him back to the truth of his maleness.
As he faced resistance from the Christians around him, Shupe realized that, through his activism, he had the chance to exact revenge on their “narrow-mindedness.”
“I didn’t know much about the Bible back then, but I knew enough to know they cherished its teaching about how God created only male and female,” Shupe said.
“So I vowed to destroy that sacred belief.”
Rather than keep pursuing a new female identity, Shupe petitioned a county court in Oregon to change his legal sex designation to “non-binary.”
He would be the first United States citizen to receive this title.
Although he was lauded as “brave” for making history in the courts, Shupe was driven purely by the motive of revenge.
“[My] landmark court case was built on lies, deceit, and pseudoscience,” he said.
“[But] none of that mattered, because winning meant getting sweet revenge against those who I’d come to believe were harming me and stopping me from engaging in my addiction.”
Shupe wanted to destroy “the definition of sex as we’ve known it for over 200 years in America.” He hoped that this legal movement would shatter the faith and confidence of Christians who had antagonized him.
But he just found himself in more pain — and more confusion — than ever.
“I entertained reporters with tales of how I was the third gender: a special combination of male biology and a female gender identity,” Shupe remembered. “Of course, it was all a complete delusion.”
Shupe received the legal designation of “non-binary” in 2016, and he lived as a non-binary individual for three years.
“[But] by Christmas Eve 2019, I was done with the lies,” he said. His life as a transgender, then non-binary, activist had only brought him pain.
Shupe realized that the Christians who he’d thought hated him had only been trying to guide him to the truth. And he realized that God was ready to extend a much deeper love to him than his “LGBT” friends could.
“In church and public, I confessed my sins, and humbled myself before the Lord, pleading for Him to lift me up. As a result, the Lord has lifted me, and I’m now getting the help I should have gotten all along.”
When Shupe finally admitted that his behavior was rooted in a mental disorder, he sought help from doctors, psychologists, and even a Christian legal organization.
The legal organization helped Shupe change his legal sex designation back to male, marking a full circle in his life of experimentation and rebellion against God’s design.
“I have admitted that I am powerless over my mental illness and…disorder. I have accepted that…only a power greater than myself can restore me to sanity,” Shupe confessed.
“And I have made a conscious decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of God.”
Now, Shupe hopes to advocate for the biblical definition of gender, knowing that it’s God’s way of protecting people like him — and all of us.
“It took seeing and experiencing all of that destruction… for me to finally understand that Christianity builds stronger families, safer communities, and most importantly, a better nation,” Shupe noted.
And Shupe has an important message for those who know people in his situation.
“Should I relapse, the correct response for others would be to promptly get me help,” he urged. “But do not, under any circumstances, indulge my past delusions or new ones.”
These are sobering words in our era of gender experimentation and “LGBT” activism.
Pray that Shupe’s testimony will have a profound effect on those trapped in a “transgender” lifestyle, and praise God for His power to forgive and redeem all of us!
