One of the most anticipated events of the season is the long-awaited summer vacation where family, tradition, and adventure meet.
Sometimes these getaways with our children prove a bit more eventful than we planned like the broken wrist from climbing the fake tree at putt-putt – but we usually always return home with good laughs and plenty of new material for the photo album.
But even better, now a recent study shows that by whisking your children off for a travel adventure, you’re actually giving them so much more.
According to a new study, kids who have the opportunity to travel and see different parts of the world do better in school.
So, get packing and boost those report cards!
As Travel and Leisure reports:
“A new survey suggests that if you want your kids to be more successful in school, you should take them on vacation more.
When the Student and Youth Travel Association (SYTA) conducted a survey of nearly 1,500 teachers in the United States, a staggering 74% of teachers questioned said they firmly believed that travel has “a very positive impact on students’ personal development.”
Over 50% said they believe this positive impact can improve children’s educations and careers.
The study showed the positive effects were even more than one would suspect. According to Travel and Leisure:
“Travel can have far-reaching impacts on kids. Teachers agreed that children who traveled to experience cultures other than their own have increased tolerance and respectfulness, willingness to learn and a willingness to try new things.”
Respecting others and being willing to learn are great skills not only important in school, but in all areas of life including areas of peer interaction.
The survey also found that:
“Kids who traveled were more likely to have higher independence, self-esteem, confidence, adaptability and sensitivity. They were also more likely to be more outgoing and have better self-expression than kids who stayed at home.”
And 42% of teachers said that having travel experience is often more attractive to college recruiters when put on applications.
But does this all mean that you need to go and see the whole entire world so your child can receive a college education?
Not at all!
Experiencing other cultures, ethnicities, and learning how others live can be done right here in America.
But be ready to have a professional traveler in the making, because 76% of the teachers also found that kids who got a taste for the road wanted more when they returned home.
And yes, we know that planning a family trip can be daunting with all the reservations, packing, saving, preparing, and arranging.
