Maybe you’ve finally got your diet in check and have finally switched to eating healthy organic foods.
But if you are still slathering toxic chemicals all over your skin – you’re not out of the clear just yet.
If you’re not sure how to make the switch to natural products – we’ve got you covered!
And the best part of all – is you’ll actually save money.
Here are few products to get you started.
Facial Toner
An important part of keeping your skin healthy is using a facial toner.
But the problem is most facial toners are loaded with skin drying chemicals(like alcohol), dyes, and “fragrance.”
The truth is, fragrance is a proprietary term that companies use to put whatever they want into their products, without having to disclose what it is.
Talk about sketchy.
In the past, I used Johnson & Johnson toner for “sensitive skin.”
The ingredients included: Water, SD Alcohol 40-B, Glycerin, Isoceteth-20, PEG-32, Sodium Citrate, Fragrance, Propylene Glycol, Dimethicone Propyl PG-Betaine, Benzophenone-4, Algae Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Blue 1.
Yikes!
I was literally loading that stuff all over my face, thinking I was “cleansing my skin.”
Not to mention it was nearly $8.00 a bottle.
But as I became more health conscious, I started using an apple cider toner recipe that works even better.
And the best part of all is it only has two ingredients!
Simply mix together 1-part apple cider vinegar and 2 parts water.
That’s it!
Not only will it help you take off your lingering makeup, but it helps balance the pH on your face.
Deodorant
Most deodorant is loaded full of toxins – including aluminum (which is known to cause cancer).
In addition, antiperspirant stops you from sweating…
which means all the toxins stay trapped inside your body…
But, it’s not as if we can go without wearing deodorant.
There are natural products you can buy in the store, but a lot of them don’t work out so well.
However, there is a homemade recipe that is not only easy to make – it works!
Zero Waste Girl recommended the following recipe:
Combine the following ingredients in a glass bowl and place over a double boiler.
- 2tbsp arrowroot powder
- 1tbsp baking soda
- 1tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp shea butter
After the ingredients start to melt, add in 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil like lavender, peppermint oil, or eucalyptus oil.
Next, pour the mix into a small mason jar and place in the fridge.
After it cools – you are ready to go! Just use your finger to apply it.
Even better, it’s actually quite easy to make – and very inexpensive!
And… it works.
Toothpaste
There’s a lot of debate about toothpaste.
Many people simply pick up a tube of toothpaste and don’t think twice.
But toothpaste is full of artificial coloring and flavoring – not to mention fluoride.
Dr. Axe reported other chemicals that linger in your toothpaste like propylene glycol which is used to make antifreeze and sodium lauryl sulfate which can cause canker sores.
Not to mention fluoride…which is said to cause a host of health problems like neurological and bone problems.
Other people use charcoal toothpaste – which is said to keep your teeth white –although the jury is still out on if this is actually effective.
But toothpaste is another easy product you can make at home.
Here is a simple recipe one you can alter:
- 4 tbsp of coconut oil
- 2 tbsp of baking soda
- 15 drops of essential oil (peppermint is a good one) * Note make sure when using essential oils in your toothpaste, you add a food safe essential oil – as some are for external or fragrance use only.
Again, you can try different ratios to find what works for you.
If you can’t stand to give up typical toothpaste – at least try and use a natural one every other day.
Start One Thing At A Time
It might be overwhelming to start making all of your own products from scratch.
Pick one thing and start with that, before moving on to the next.
And feel free to experiment with the recipes and find what works best for you. You might find different ways to make products that work better for your body and skin type.
The most important thing is to not give up!
Our skin is our largest organ – so we should take care to make sure we aren’t loading “fragrance” and toxic chemicals all over our body.
As you begin to transition to a more natural way of living, you’ll gain confidence in knowing you are taking care of your health.
And as a bonus – you’ll be able to save money – instead of wasting money buying products.
