Adrienne Johnson was an avid atheist and proud of her rowdy, party-filled lifestyle.
Until one day after a failed marriage she found herself hopelessly depressed and suicidal – and fell to a new low she didn’t even know was possible.
But it was in the lowest moment of her life, right when she had given up, that she began to realize there must be something more – and then she found out Jesus is real.
As Adrienne shares her testimony on PragerU, she recalls being raised by two secular parents and not really given a moral structure to live by.
Desperately trying to fill the void in her heart that only God could fill, she sought the things of this world – only to learn they left her even emptier than she was before.
CBN News reported:
“I was very hostile toward it [and] thought that anybody who had any kind of religion or spirituality at all was just not very bright, not very intelligent,” she said. “I was all about science and rationality and common sense.”
Johnson said her life was reflective of her disinterest in anything spiritual, noting she had “no morals” and “no boundaries” and was desperately trying to fill a void in her heart.
“I had this hole in my heart that I was trying to fill because I didn’t have God,” she said. “But I was trying to fill it with all of these things that didn’t work.”
Hoping to finally fill the void, she got married. But she still felt empty. So she thought she’d simply married the wrong guy and ended up having an affair.
After her husband left her – she crashed.
Adrienne finally realized she was part of the problem in her life and needed something bigger than herself to save her – and that no man could ever fill the hole in her heart that was designed for God.
During a recovery program for love and sex addicts, she began to start a spiritual journey… which led her mind to be open for the first time.
And then when a friend invited her to attend a play of The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis – she was so blown away that she had to at least consider Christianity as an option, reported CBN News.
As Adrienne’s faith journey continued, she started attending church and reading the Bible.
She made amends with those she had hurt in the past, and finally came to the point where she knew and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior!
Adrienne remarried another Christian, whom she says loves Jesus more than her!
What a beautiful act of redemption in her life.
While we may think atheists are “too hard-hearted” to ever come to Christ – Adrienne’s story shows us all what we already know – that God can reach anyone through His mighty power.
Many atheists come to realize that their intellectual abilities and “reason” will never be enough – and they fall into the loving arms of Jesus and learn He’s truly everything they need.
We wish Adrienne well as she enjoys the peace of living as a new creation in Christ.
