With several airports in the United States undergoing renovations – all kinds of new amenities seem to be popping up.
And while these perks usually include more places to charge your phone, revamped lounges, and new artwork – some airports have taken it to a whole other level.
From pop-up marriage booths to coat checks… and even free “compliments” – here are some of the most unique amenities from airports around the country.
Pop-Up Marriage Booth
Flying with your significant other and want to get married?
For the past four years, Harry Reid International Airport has operated a temporary marriage license booth right in the airport to help lovebirds get a head start in their Vegas trip.
We know Vegas is dubbed “The Wedding Capital of the World” – but this is a bit nuts.
But I guess no matter what happens in Vegas…
… convenience trumps romance.
Coat Check
Are you traveling somewhere warm and don’t want to lug your heavy winter coat around with you?
Well, you’re in luck!
If you fly out of Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, for $2 per day or $10 per trip – you can actually “check” your winter coat at the airport and pick it up when you return home.
Talk about a smart and affordable way to help lighten the load for travelers.
Way to go Milwaukee!
Golf And Ice Skate While You Wait
Have some time to kill before your flight?
If you’re flying out of Denver – you can take advantage of their complementary ice-skating rink in the winter – and mini-golf course in the warmer months!
That’s right – this past holiday season, Denver provided travelers with complementary ice-skates and let them skate around their outdoor ice-rink before their flight.
The Denver Post reported:
“We are excited to announce our ice rink is back for passengers and community members to enjoy,” said airport CEO Phil Washington in a prepared statement. The ice-skating rink operated for four years before the pandemic shut it down during the winters of 2020 and 2021.
“Whether folks are traveling to or through DEN, or just want to visit the airport for the day and enjoy this free activity with friends and family, DEN is here to provide holiday cheer,” he added.”
Props to Denver.
Giving people something fun and active to do (instead of binging on overpriced greasy airport food) – and not charging them for it – is a win-win.
Not to mention, I’m sure travelers love having the opportunity to enjoy some fresh air before being crammed onto a tiny plane.
Free “Compliments”
Ok… the intentions behind this gesture might be sincere – but this one’s a little bit creepy.
In honor of “National Compliments Day” – Reno-Tahoe International Airport hosted a “compliments booth” along with various compliments posted throughout the airport.
The Points Guy reported:
“Starting at 9 a.m., the team will deliver compliments such as “That color is perfect for you,” “I bet you sweat glitter,” and “You are glowing,” to passengers, meters and greeters, and airport employees.
The nice-fest will continue “until the complement of compliments are exhausted,” says airport spokeswoman Annie Turner.
For those who would like to take their compliments, such as “Your smile is contagious” or “You’re more fun than bubble wrap” with them, RNO has also prepared flyers with tear-off compliments.”
I mean… when I’m flying, I’m just trying to get through security and to my gate – I don’t want some airport worker telling me I “sweat glitter” or I’m “more fun than bubble wrap.”
It’s just weird!
But I’m sure some people might find it cute.
Parting Thoughts
Most of us just want to get through the airport as fast as possible and make it to our destination.
The greatest “gift” air travel can give us is a flight that’s actually on time.
